Think you know Bob Dylan? Think again. Sure, he's known as the Nobel Prize-winning troubadour, the poet who's changed the course of modern music, but in addition to being a lyricist, Dylan is an artist. His paintings, drawings, and ironwork sculptures fill galleries and collections all around the world, and it was over two decades ago that Dylan decided to pursue an art career consciously apart from his music. His artwork maintains his gritty, honest, and detailed observational style, but he now presents it as brush strokes and steel instead of verses.
His haunting American landscapes in The Beaten Path appeal to collectors, investors, and lifelong fans alike, while his experimental performance of text and image in Mondo Scripto engages gallery-goers.

Bob Dylan was born Robert Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1941, and in the early 1960s, he exploded onto the Folk music scene. While the world was wondering what his lyrics meant, Dylan's world was rich with sketching, drawing, and painting, and it is known that he was looking, observing, and creating.
Dylan first gained acclaim in visual art in 2007, with the Drawn Blank series, a rebirth of bright colours of drawings he did in the 1980s, but before this all, he was already over three decades solidifying his visual art prowess and reputation. And he continues to do so, with major opening exhibitions at the Halcyon Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery in London and others.
His work continues to evolve in watercolours, acrylics, sculpture, welded iron gates, and many more, which makes Bob Dylan one of the more dynamic and engaging cross-disciplinary artists of our time.
Dylan isn't off and on; he's all in. Each series might demonstrate a different approach, mood, style, perspective, or whatever, but they all get conveyed through his practice. The Drawn Blank Series, with vignettes from everyday existence, was demonstrated as expressive, watercolour and gouache, as he captures and distils the moment, without interpretation. The Beaten Path is the road trip of America, presenting breathtaking views of gas stations, diners, road bridges, and remote and forgotten roads. This is similarly shown in The Asia Series and the Brazil Series take you travelling with him, but the truth is it reflects Dylan's travels as an artist, and travel is certainly fuel for his path.
Whilst Mondo Scripto represents black-and-white drawings of handwritten lyrics, showing the internal workings of Dylan probably talking to himself, or perhaps undoing the frightful hole of myth he has become trapped in. And, Deep Focus has a surreal quality to it, and while encased with obscure stills from films to provide obscure, dark, moody, and atmospheric reflections.
Point Blank is Dylan’s most recent series, and speaks to honest urban realism. It is filled with a tension and muted drama of a noiresque tour-de-force; it has also brought him to where darkness and light meet.
Each series stands on its own - yet they are all undoubtedly Dylan.
Artistic Modes and Themes
Dylan's tools are myriad, as varied as his sounds. He uses watercolour, acrylic and ink, charcoal and within a medium, like genres, he moves quickly and seamlessly. Dylan’s paintings often exist at a flux between a loose and expressive style and a structured realism - there is always a story, but it will never lead you by the hand.
Dylan's themes include American landscapes, urban isolation, nostalgia and cultural commentary - all usually present with elements of melancholy beauty and quiet detachment. Add into the mix Dylan's ironwork gates, made from repurposed tools and farm implements, directly referencing his Midwestern place of belonging. Like his songs, these sculptures are rugged, layered and will withstand the test of time.
Dylan's visual artworks have earned strong traction in the global art market. In 2022, a work from his series called The Beaten Path sold for more than £100,000 at Christie's. With music lovers, art collectors and cultural institutions that support Dylan as both an artist and social commentator, demand for Dylan's work shows no sign of slowing. As he progresses in his studio practice, so has his presence in markets, making Dylan not just a cultural icon, but a collectable artist in the world of the blue-chip contemporary art market.
With Dylan's star status comes the need for iron-clad authenticity. All works will be issued with a certificate of authenticity from reliable galleries, such as Halcyon Gallery, which have represented Dylan for the last decade.
