Delfin Finley

AmericanAmerican
, b. 1994

Born and raised in Los Angeles to fashion designer parents, Delfin Finley grew up in a creative environment that fostered his artistic development. As a child, he expressed himself through drawings, documenting his experiences as a young Black boy in America, while drawing inspiration from the city’s vibrant murals, which his father introduced him to. At 19, Finley began painting while studying Fine Arts in Pasadena, which led to his debut solo exhibition, Some Things Never Change, in Los Angeles last year. The show sold out on opening night, with every painting finding a new home. The title referenced the persistent social and political challenges in America, with Finley’s work reflecting his personal experiences with racial prejudice and violence. Featuring striking portraits of people of color, including Tyler, the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, and Finley’s own father, the exhibition examined the shared reality of racial oppression. Through this, Finley aimed to provoke a deeper reflection on societal biases and encourage viewers to confront their own perceptions.
