Elizabeth Magill

Elizabeth Magill is a contemporary painter known for atmospheric, psychologically charged landscapes that blur the boundaries between observation, memory, and imagination. Drawing on places associated with both her childhood and adult life, she creates compositions in which familiar natural environments take on an ambiguous, dreamlike quality.Working primarily in oil, Magill often begins with photographs gathered over several decades, using them as starting points rather than fixed references. At times, photographic elements are incorporated directly into her paintings, allowing different layers of representation to coexist within a single image. Her landscapes are frequently devoid of figures, although traces of human presence—houses, roads, lights, or distant structures—suggest habitation just beyond view.Experimentation is central to Magill’s practice.
