Laust Højgaard’s universe is defined by exaggeration, meticulous attention to detail, richly considered textures, and deliberate distortion. Working on several paintings simultaneously, the artist creates a strong sense of coherence across his practice, allowing disparate sources of inspiration to resonate with one another.His canvases function like densely packed boxes, each one containing a multitude of references. Within them, characters move freely between influences, as mythology intersects with pop and urban culture. Bodies marked with symbols become vehicles for geometry, irony, and a sense of gigantism. Each figure is distinct, developing its own expressive body language through a direct and physical approach to the canvas.Built up through multiple layers of paint, Højgaard’s surfaces acquire a palpable depth and material presence. The result is a visual language that feels at once playful, provocative, and meticulously constructed, where seemingly contrasting references are brought into unexpected dialogue.Højgaard studied at the Design Academy in Odense, the Drawing Academy, and the Danish School of Media and Journalism.
