, b. 1982

Matthew Stone is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture, photography, and performance. His work has been shown in prestigious venues like Tate Britain, the ICA, and the Royal Academy of Art in the UK, as well as internationally at CHOI&CHOI, The Hole, and the Marrakech Biennale. Stone was a key figure in the South London art collective !WOWOW! and helped shape the cultural scene in London’s East End in the mid-2000s. Stone's work engages with the history of painting, focusing on the body, interconnection, and hierarchy, while also exploring the role of art as propaganda to promote social unity. His recent work pushes the boundaries of painting and photography, challenging traditional views of painting while advancing the sensory experience of paint. Stone’s performance art, such as Love Focused Like a Laser (2013), explores contemporary unease and uses emotional manipulation to provoke philosophical reflection on human behavior.
