He is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in Politics, African Studies, and Fine Arts. After studying mime and theatre in Paris, he became a key member of Johannesburg's Junction Avenue Theatre Company from 1975 to 1991. He gained prominence for his innovative animation technique, using successive charcoal drawings on a single sheet of paper, which became a hallmark of his work. His animated films explore political, social, and personal themes, with notable works including Johannesburg, 2nd Greatest City After Paris (1989), Felix in Exile (1994), and Stereoscope (1999). His art has been featured in major international exhibitions, including Documenta X, the São Paulo Art Biennial, and the Venice Art Biennial. In addition to his visual art, he has directed opera productions and collaborated with composer François Sarhan on a musical piece.
