Donald Sultan, born in 1951 in Asheville, North Carolina, is a renowned contemporary artist known for his work in painting, printmaking, and sculpture. He earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before moving to New York in 1975. Sultan’s work, primarily abstract, often features large-scale still-life compositions of objects like lemons, flowers, and fruit set against stark black backgrounds. His art combines geometric and organic forms with a focus on both positive and negative space, creating a powerful visual impact.

Sultan has exhibited extensively and received numerous accolades, including honorary doctorates and the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship. His work is included in major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Tate Gallery in London, and the Hirshhorn Museum.
