Alex Israel

AmericanAmerican
, b. 1982
With a sharp, self-aware wit, Alex Israel explores the spectacle of Hollywood, the cult of celebrity, and the seductive myths of the American dream through painting and sculpture. Drawing on the visual language of the entertainment industry, he is best known for his stylized, head-shaped “self-portraits,” often overlaid with vivid, sun-soaked imagery evocative of Los Angeles. His practice extends beyond traditional media to include ready-made installations—such as rented film props—and video works that parody the aesthetics of campy television talk shows. In collaboration with the scenic painting department at Warner Bros. Studios, Israel has produced pastel-toned depictions of the Los Angeles sky, alongside airbrushed canvases shaped like the grand windows and doorways of Golden Age Hollywood architecture. He received his BA from Yale University and his MFA from the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Fine Arts in 2010.Israel’s work is held in major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim Museum, the Astrup Fearnley Museet, and Moderna Museet. He has exhibited widely in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome, and Hong Kong. On the secondary market, his works have achieved seven-figure prices, underscoring his prominence within the contemporary art world.
