Working in a self-described style he calls “Science Fiction Expressionism,” André Butzer creates biomorphic figures set against chaotic, psychedelic grounds and expansive color fields. His psychologically charged forms recall the visceral intensity of Willem de Kooning and Philip Guston, yet Butzer channels their animated gestures through a distinctly cartoon-inflected visual language that embraces exaggeration, distortion, and maximalism. His frenetic mark-making and looping scribbles also echo the painterly energy of Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly.Butzer has exhibited internationally in cities including New York, Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, Dubai, Copenhagen, and Geneva. His work regularly achieves six-figure prices on the secondary market and is held in major institutional collections such as Fondazione Prada, Saatchi Gallery, Goetz Collection, Rubell Museum, and the University of Chicago, among others.
