Angie Lewin

Angie Lewin is a British artist, printmaker, painter and designer, born in Cheshire. She studied BA (Hons) Fine Art Printmaking at Central St Martins College of Art and Design from 1983 to 1986, followed by postgraduate studies in printmaking at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts. After working as an illustrator in London, Lewin studied horticulture, an experience that would become closely connected to the botanical subjects of her later work.Lewin is best known for her distinctive depictions of the British landscape and its native flora. Inspired particularly by the clifftops and saltmarshes of the North Norfolk coast and the landscapes of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, she creates intricate compositions in linocut, wood engraving, screenprint, lithography, watercolour and collage. Her landscapes are frequently viewed through detailed arrangements of grasses, seedheads, wildflowers and other plant forms, reflecting her close observation of the natural environment.Walking and sketching in the landscape form an important part of Lewin's creative process. She collects natural objects such as seedpods, grasses, feathers, pebbles, flints and dried seaweed, which often reappear in her prints, paintings and still-life compositions. Her work transforms these modest botanical and natural forms into carefully structured images characterised by rhythmic line, pattern and a strong sense of place.Alongside her fine art practice, Lewin has worked extensively in illustration and design. In 2005 she co-founded St Jude's with her husband, Simon Lewin, producing artist-designed fabrics and wallpapers. She has also designed fabric for Liberty and undertaken commissions for publishers including Penguin, Faber, Conran Octopus, Merrell and Picador.Lewin's work has been exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and is held in public and private collections, including those of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Ashmolean Museum and Aberystwyth University. In 2010, Merrell published the monograph Angie Lewin: Plants and Places, bringing together more than seventy of her limited-edition prints alongside drawings, paintings and collages.Lewin was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 2006, the Society of Wood Engravers in 2008, the Art Workers' Guild in 2010 and the Royal Watercolour Society in 2016. She now lives and works primarily in Scotland, continuing to explore the relationship between plants, landscape and the changing seasons through printmaking and painting.
