Anthea Hamilton is a British artist known for her immersive installations, sculpture, film, and performance works that blend surrealism, design, and pop-cultural references. Her practice is characterized by a playful yet sophisticated exploration of identity, gender, and the body, often reconfiguring familiar images and objects into unexpected, theatrical environments.Hamilton studied at the Leeds Metropolitan University before completing an MA at the Royal College of Art. Drawing on a wide range of influences—from fashion and architecture to modernist design and erotic imagery—she constructs works that challenge conventional notions of taste, aesthetics, and social codes. She gained widespread recognition with her nomination for the Turner Prize in 2016, particularly for her installation Project for a Door (After Gaetano Pesce), a large-scale sculptural work that exemplifies her interest in the body as both object and symbol. Hamilton frequently collaborates with creatives across disciplines, including architects, set designers, and performers, reinforcing the hybrid nature of her practice. Her work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions such as Tate Britain, Tate St Ives, The Hepworth Wakefield, and Schinkel Pavillon.Anthea Hamilton’s work occupies a distinctive space within contemporary art, where humor, sensuality, and cultural critique intersect. By destabilizing familiar forms and meanings, she invites viewers into a world that is at once disorienting, seductive, and deeply reflective of contemporary visual culture.
