Antonia Showering’s lush, dreamlike oil paintings of her family members evoke the fluid, ephemeral nature of memory. She often begins by laying her canvas flat, allowing colors to pool and merge organically, creating atmospheric foundations onto which she layers her figurative forms. This process imbues her work with a sense of spontaneity and emotional depth, capturing the hazy, shifting quality of recollection. Showering holds an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art, and her work has been exhibited in London, Liverpool, Copenhagen, and Los Angeles. In 2019, she received the New Contemporaries’ Studio Bursary with SPACE in London. Drawing inspiration from artists like Alice Neel, Edvard Munch, and Arshile Gorky, Showering blends elements of landscape and portraiture to craft intimate, evocative recreations of personal experience.
