Ashley Oubre

Ashley Oubré is an American visual artist originally from Washington, D.C., who lives and works in New England. Best known for meticulously rendered figurative works that are frequently mistaken for photographs, she creates paintings and drawings using materials including pastel, India ink, graphite, carbon pencil, and oil on paper, canvas, and wood.Oubré’s practice combines close observation with memory, projection, and unresolved emotion. Her psychologically charged compositions explore tensions between visibility and concealment, stability and uncertainty, isolation and connection. Rather than idealizing the human body, she focuses on vulnerability, aging, physical difference, and characteristics often excluded from conventional portraiture, creating images that are intimate, emotionally complex, and quietly unsettling.Initially working in a highly structured monochromatic style, Oubré used ink to establish shapes and tonal areas before developing finer details with graphite and pencil. Her later adoption of pastel introduced softer surfaces and more atmospheric layers, while her expanding use of color, oil, and less controlled mark-making has brought greater ambiguity and abstraction to her compositions.
