Chase Hall (b. 1993, St. Paul, Minnesota) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work critically engages with the complexities of race, identity, and American history. Through a practice encompassing painting, drawing, photography, video, and sculpture, Hall explores the nuanced experiences of Black and biracial individuals in contemporary society.Hall is renowned for his innovative use of materials, notably painting on unprimed cotton canvas—a deliberate reference to the material's historical associations with slavery and labor. He often employs coffee as a staining medium, infusing his works with rich, earthy tones that evoke both personal and collective memory. His gestural brushwork and vibrant compositions depict subjects ranging from jazz musicians and birders to individuals confronting systemic injustice, thereby challenging and recontextualizing stereotypical representations of Blackness in American culture.
