Christina Quarles is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work challenges assumptions about identity and the human figure. Drawing from personal experience and diverse influences, she uses gestural line-making, abstraction, and text to explore the complexity of bodily identity and self-perception. Quarles' paintings often combine human forms with layered compositions, using digital manipulation and stencils to create intricate, sculptural works. Her recent pieces address political themes, including the trauma of family separations at the US-Mexico border. Quarles has received numerous awards, including the 2019 Pérez Art Museum Miami Prize, and has exhibited widely.
