Dr Esther Mahlangu is a pioneering Ndebele artist whose large-scale, hand-painted geometric compositions bring a living tradition into contemporary art. Using acrylic on canvas, wood and architecture, she translates mural patterns historically painted by Ndebele women into crisp, vibrant abstractions.
Her work bridges community practice and international platforms—from public commissions to design collaborations—without diluting cultural specificity. Through teaching and studio practice she has safeguarded and amplified Ndebele visual language on a global stage.
