Emma McIntyre is a New Zealand-born, Los Angeles–based artist whose interdisciplinary practice spans painting, installation, video, and performance. Her work is characterized by an intuitive, process-driven approach in which materials, gestures, and chance play a central role. Moving fluidly between abstraction and figuration, McIntyre constructs layered compositions that explore perception, memory, and the unstable nature of images.McIntyre’s paintings often incorporate a wide range of media—including acrylic, oil, airbrush, and collage—resulting in surfaces that feel both immediate and atmospheric. Her compositions are marked by shifting spatial registers, translucent overlays, and gestural marks that evoke both digital and organic forms. Through these strategies, she examines the tension between materiality and illusion, as well as the ways images are constructed and consumed in contemporary visual culture.Alongside her studio practice, McIntyre has developed an expanded approach to painting through installation and performance, frequently activating exhibition spaces with site-responsive works. Her practice reflects a sustained interest in the circulation of images, the role of technology in shaping visual experience, and the porous boundaries between physical and virtual environments.McIntyre has exhibited internationally, with solo and group exhibitions at institutions and galleries across New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and the United States. She completed her MFA at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and her work continues to gain recognition for its dynamic engagement with the evolving language of painting.
