Born in Medellín, Colombia in 1932, Maestro Fernando Botero became one of the most celebrated and instantly recognizable artists of the modern era. His early works drew inspiration from Gustave Doré’s engravings of The Divine Comedy and traditional bullfight posters. By 1951, he held his first exhibition in Bogotá, and just a year later, he won second prize at the prestigious “Salón Nacional de Artistas.” Using his award money, Botero traveled to Madrid and Florence, where he immersed himself in the techniques of Renaissance masters, deepening his understanding of volume and perspective.Throughout his six-decade career, Botero developed and refined a unique visual language—known as Boterismo—characterized by voluptuous forms, rich color palettes, and a bold reinterpretation of proportion. This style not only challenged conventional ideals of beauty but also carved out a pioneering aesthetic that was both playful and profound.While his subject matter remained deeply rooted in Colombian and Latin American culture, Botero's art spoke a universal language. His works transcended borders, earning him international acclaim and exhibitions in major museums across the globe.
