Harmonia Rosales was born in Chicago in 1984. She is an Afro-Cuban American artist whose paintings reimagine classical Western art through the lens of African and female identity. By substituting Black women for traditional European subjects, Rosales dismantles historical hierarchies of beauty and power. Her works combine mythological, religious and cultural symbolism with lush, luminous brushwork and gold leaf. Drawing on Yoruba cosmology and Renaissance composition, she creates a dialogue between African heritage and European art history.
