Henk van Rensbergen

BelgianBelgian
, b. 1968
As a photographer, he explores the empty buildings of our time—an urban world from which mankind seems to have vanished. His images reveal the silent beauty and macabre decay of these places, sometimes exposing their hidden secrets. Imagining a post-apocalyptic future, Henk van Rensbergen envisions new occupants for these abandoned spaces, creating photographs and impressions in which fantasy takes the upper hand.“Some of the photographs were taken at locations I encountered during my flights, but most are the result of carefully planned explorations. I prefer to go alone, although with many sites this isn’t always wise. I am very aware of the legal issues involved: I never force my way in, never invade privacy, take nothing but photographs, and leave nothing but footprints. My work seeks to capture the atmosphere that reigns within these places. Although abandoned by people, their presence remains tangible. It is this eerie, ghost-like feeling that so powerfully stirs the imagination.I was still a child when I first began exploring. I vividly remember the urge to enter a frightening abandoned villa in the dunes of Oostduinkerke, a Belgian coastal town— the first exploration in a long series.”Henk van Rensbergen has held numerous exhibitions and has been represented at various art fairs. His photographs and distinctive vision have been widely featured in both national and international press. Belgian publisher Lannoo has released five books dedicated to his work on abandoned places, several of which remain available.
