Hilda Palafox

MexicanMexican
, b. 1982
Hilda Palafox creates striking images of poised, authoritative women whose monumental bodies inhabit compositions that imagine a matriarchal world. Trained as a graphic designer, she is best known for her large-scale canvases, where these commanding figures appear alongside recurring symbols—serpents, vessels, columns, and celestial orbs—that evoke ritual, fertility, and cosmic balance. In addition to painting, Palafox works across paper, ceramics, textiles, and murals, extending her visual language into multiple mediums.A graduate of La Escuela de Diseño del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, Palafox draws on the legacies of Mexican cultural icons such as Frida Kahlo, José Guadalupe Posada, and Nahui Olin. Their influence resonates in her contemporary reimaginings of Mexican mythology and folklore. Her work has been exhibited internationally in cities including Denver, Montreal, and Madrid, and she occasionally signs her pieces with the pseudonym Poni.
