Imi Knoebel (b. 1940, Dessau) is a leading German abstract artist whose practice explores colour, geometry and material through shaped panels, layered paints and minimalist structures. A student of Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and a close associate of Blinky Palermo, he is known for works from Raum 19 to luminous aluminium and MDF reliefs, as well as stained-glass commissions for Reims Cathedral. He lives and works in Düsseldorf.
