Jake Longstreth captures the essence of the American landscape, yet his work is most celebrated for its focus on the nation’s ubiquitous strip malls and sprawling suburbs. His deadpan style, reminiscent of Ed Ruscha, Edward Hopper, and Robert Bechtle, explores the contemporary “ghost towns” left behind by a culture of consumerism. In his series Particulate Matter, Longstreth confronts climate change head-on, portraying its tangible impact on California’s environment, now perpetually veiled in the hazy light of smog and wildfire smoke.
His work has been featured in prominent publications such as Art in America, Artforum, and the Huffington Post. Longstreth’s paintings are held in esteemed collections, including the Crocker Art Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. A recipient of the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2008, Longstreth has also co-hosted the radio show Time Crisis with musician Ezra Koenig since 2015, blending his artistic voice with cultural commentary.
