About The Artist
Taiwanese, American, b. 1979
James Jean creates vast cosmological worlds in his large-scale paintings, merging allegory, mythology, and contemporary culture into compositions that feel both ancient and ultramodern. His work draws from an expansive visual vocabulary, incorporating elements of Chinese and Japanese scroll painting, Japanese woodblock prints, Renaissance portraiture, comic books, and anime. By weaving together these diverse lineages, Jean dissolves the boundaries between old and new, East and West, tradition and innovation. Alongside his fine art practice, he has worked as an award-winning cover illustrator for Marvel and DC Comics, and collaborated with global brands such as Prada and Apple, as well as musicians including My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park. His work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Seoul, Tokyo, and beyond, and he has designed celebrated film posters for Mother!, The Shape of Water, and Blade Runner 2049.
Born in Taiwan and raised in New Jersey, James Jean studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York before rising to prominence as one of the most acclaimed illustrators of his generation. His early career in publishing, particularly his work on covers for Marvel and DC Comics, showcased his refined draftsmanship and ability to create dense, narrative-driven imagery. Over time, Jean shifted his focus toward fine art, developing a painterly language that fused his illustrative precision with expansive, symbolic worlds.
His international exhibitions reveal an artist deeply engaged with cross-cultural visual histories. Jean’s work evokes the fluidity of ink painting, the drama of Baroque composition, and the storytelling impulse of graphic novels. This synthesis has positioned him as a singular figure in contemporary art, one whose stylistic versatility is matched by an ability to build layered, emotionally charged universes.
