James Turrell, a pioneering figure in the Light and Space movement, is renowned for his mesmerizing light installations and holograms that create stunning optical illusions. His works can appear as cubes, flat planes, pyramids, or tunnels—entirely formed from light itself. Turrell's artistic journey began at the University of California, Irvine, followed by further study in the art and technology program at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It was here, alongside fellow light artist Robert Irwin, that Turrell refined his distinctive approach and visual language. His groundbreaking works have been featured in prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and Museo Jumex, to name just a few. Since the 1970s, Turrell has been developing the Roden Crater, an ambitious celestial observatory located in Arizona, where he continues to explore the intersection of light, space, and perception.
