Jeffrey Gibson

AmericanAmerican
, b. 1972

Jeffrey Gibson is renowned for his richly patterned and embellished hanging textiles and Everlast punching bags, which take inspiration from alternative subcultures, Indigenous handicrafts, minimalism, and other modernist movements. Gibson, who is of Choctaw and Cherokee descent, lavishes his sculptures with rainbows of tassels, charms, stones, and intricate beadwork that honor cultural hybridity and his own heritage. His paintings, meanwhile, are largely abstract and geometric; they frequently incorporate text from songs, poems, and Gibson’s own imagination. The artist has exhibited widely across America and is represented in the collections of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Denver Art Museum, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, among others. In 2019, Gibson featured in the Whitney Biennial and was named a MacArthur fellow. His work has sold for six figures at auction.
