BritishBritish
, b. 1985
Jessie Makinson’s shadowy, richly detailed canvases construct vivid new ecofeminist mythologies. Working with high-contrast palettes and intricate compositions, she depicts human-animal hybrids, fantastical creatures, and liberated female figures moving through dense worlds of flora and fauna. Her paintings bring together a wide range of references, from pop culture, mythology, history, and science fiction, creating layered scenes that feel both ancient and futuristic. Makinson studied at Camberwell College of Arts, Edinburgh College of Art, and the Royal Drawing School. She has presented solo exhibitions in New York, Mexico City, London, and Zürich, establishing herself as a distinctive contemporary painter known for her imaginative, symbolically charged visual language.
