John McAllister is known for his luminous and sensuous oil paintings of interiors, landscapes, and still lifes, through which he explores the shifting qualities of light and perception. Drawing inspiration from modern masters such as Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, and Henri Matisse, McAllister employs a rich, seductive palette—often anchored in warm reds, purples, oranges, and pinks—to construct immersive, atmospheric scenes. His compositions frequently juxtapose deep, shadowed backgrounds with softly rendered, almost spectral foregrounds, at times evoking the tonal inversions of photographic negatives. This dialogue with photography recurs throughout his practice, notably in his use of unconventional, off-kilter framing that disrupts spatial expectations. McAllister also engages in playful, self-reflexive strategies, producing paintings of paintings and layered imagery that blur the boundaries between observer and creator.Exhibited internationally, McAllister’s work has been shown in cities including London, Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, Brussels, and Tokyo. His paintings are held in prominent collections such as the Rubell Museum and the Hammer Museum.
