Jonni Cheatwood is a Los Angeles-based painter known for blending oil, oil sticks, acrylics, and textiles in his works. His canvases are constructed from fabric pieces that fit together like a puzzle, creating a unified composition. Cheatwood’s artistic journey began with graffiti and evolved into the action painting of abstract expressionism. In recent years, however, his style has shifted toward figuration, incorporating detailed interiors and characters that reflect his unique approach. Cheatwood combines sewing machines, various textiles, oil paints, and transparent mylar fabrics to create these works. They evoke a warm, nostalgic feeling, reminiscent of flipping through family photo albums. While the figures in his paintings aren’t directly based on his own family or friends, they represent people he can relate to. Despite the move from abstract to figurative work, Cheatwood’s newer pieces retain some elements from his earlier abstract pieces, particularly the inventive use of fabric. Where fabric once served primarily to shape forms, it now plays a more integral role in representing specific objects and materials, such as window frames or floor tiles. Additionally, the gestural movements present in his earlier works remain a hallmark of his figurative paintings, particularly in the expressive faces of his characters, which Cheatwood refers to as his "sweet spot."
