Fascinated by faces from an early age, young contemporary artist Joseph Jones has long been captivated by the stories and emotions conveyed through portraiture. Through relentless practice and experimentation, he explored a wide range of techniques before refining a distinctive, dynamic, and highly expressive style. His work is characterised by rich, layered colour, intricate texture, and meticulous attention to detail, all carefully orchestrated to create atmosphere and narrative within each piece. The son of established Castle Fine Art artist Jon Jones, Joseph was raised in a creative environment, yet he has never received formal artistic training. His impressive ability to mix colour—central to the vitality and depth of his paintings—is entirely self-taught, guided by instinct as he brings each subject vividly to life.Born into Generation Z, Joseph draws inspiration from contemporary culture, music, and emerging trends, alongside the bold visual language of 1980s and 1990s film, television, and music. He has also closely studied the techniques of the Old Masters, including Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent, and Joshua Reynolds, as well as contemporary figures such as Jenny Saville. From these influences, he has absorbed a deep understanding of light, realism, and painterly precision—elements that now define his striking and emotive portraits. As his practice continues to evolve, Joseph pushes the boundaries of portraiture, experimenting with both traditional methods and anaglyph techniques. By constantly challenging and refining his process, he transforms each painting from a straightforward likeness into a layered, expressive, and thought-provoking experience.
