Katharina Grosse

GermanGerman
, b. 1961

Katharina Grosse’s expansive practice redefines abstract painting by breaking free from the limitations of the traditional canvas. Renowned for her monumental in situ installations, Grosse uses industrial spray guns to apply vivid color directly onto architectural surfaces, interiors, and natural landscapes—merging paint with the environments it transforms. Her work dissolves the boundaries between disciplines, whether she’s painting canvases as they hang, suspending them from ceilings, or crafting sculptural forms that erupt from the floor. By fusing painting with space and form, Grosse creates immersive experiences that challenge conventional notions of art and perception. She has exhibited widely across global art capitals including New York, London, Berlin, Tokyo, Milan, and Basel. Her work, which has fetched six-figure sums at auction, is held in major institutional collections such as Kunsthaus Zürich, Istanbul Modern, Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Centre Pompidou, and the Museum of Modern Art.
