Kerry James Marshall is a globally recognized contemporary artist known for challenging Western art history by highlighting Black life and identity. His work redefines the representation of Black figures in art, addressing the historical lack of such imagery. Born during the Civil Rights movement and raised in Los Angeles, his personal experiences deeply influence his art, which explores themes of race and American culture. Marshall’s career spans five decades, with notable exhibitions including Mastry (2016), a major retrospective, and Telling Stories (1994). He has participated in prestigious biennials and public commissions, including the 2003 and 2015 Venice Biennale and the 2023 commission of stained glass windows for the National Cathedral. His work is held in major collections worldwide, such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Tate Modern.
