Louise Nevelson

Louise Nevelson (American, born 1899) was a sculptor celebrated for monumental wall-like assemblages made from found wood. Born in the Russian Empire (in what is now Ukraine), she emigrated to the United States as a child and developed a distinctive language of stacked, compartmentalised forms. Her signature works are often painted in unified monochrome—especially black—so shadow and texture become the main drama. Nevelson’s sculpture helped reshape post-war American art by proving assemblage could feel architectural, immersive, and grand.
