Massimo Vitali (b. 1944, Como, Italy) is a celebrated photographer known for his large-scale images of beaches, pools, ski resorts, and tourist destinations. After early work as a photojournalist and cinematographer, he turned to art photography in the mid-1990s, developing the elevated, panoramic style that defines his practice today.

Working with a large-format camera mounted on a tall tripod, Vitali adopts a detached yet revealing perspective, documenting collective rituals of leisure and the ways people occupy public space. His photographs balance intimacy and distance, offering sharp insights into contemporary culture and social behavior.

Vitali’s work has been exhibited worldwide — including at the Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim, and Museo Reina Sofía — and is held in major collections. His acclaimed monographs, such as Beach and Disco and Natural Habitats, have cemented his status as a key figure in contemporary photography. He lives and works in Lucca, Italy.
