Matías Sánchez

Matías Sánchez is a self-taught artist living and working in Seville, Spain. Through an intuitive and independent practice, he has developed a distinctive visual language defined by vivid, painterly surfaces that serve as dynamic backdrops for his spirited characters and symbolic objects. His aesthetic—and at times his subject matter—pays homage to Post-Impressionist figures such as Paul Gauguin, while remaining unmistakably his own. Shifting fluidly between smoothly rendered passages and deliberately crude abstraction, Sánchez constructs grotesque yet playful dreamscapes charged with restless energy. Recurring motifs—sausages, bones, rats, and figures bearing menacing expressions—populate his compositions, forming surreal narratives that oscillate between humor and unease.
