Nancy Gifford

Nancy Gifford is a mixed-media artist whose work explores narrative through subjects that range from the poetic and personal to the political and socially engaged. Her practice encompasses intimate works, large-scale installations, sculpture, and video, using materials such as graphite, resin, wood, found objects, and moving image.Gifford frequently works in long-running series that she revisits and develops over many years, allowing themes and ideas to evolve across decades. These bodies of work include Downwind, Not My Mother’s Quilt, and Undercover, a series incorporating antique book covers that includes The Good Bad Girl Series. Other notable projects include the large-scale installation Lament; Up to No Good, which experiments with paint as a sculptural material; the Photo Luminescent Series; and The War Room.Her more recent projects include Crazy Times, Heaps of Trouble, and Imaginary Novels, an award-winning video work. Across her varied practice, Gifford combines storytelling, experimentation, and social observation to examine memory, identity, conflict, and the complexities of contemporary life.
