Paul Jenkins

Paul Jenkins pioneered intuitive, chance-driven approaches within Abstract Expressionism, expanding the movement’s possibilities through process and material. He created his luminous compositions by pouring paint directly onto the canvas and tilting the surface, allowing color to drip, bleed, and pool into fluid, diaphanous washes reminiscent of ceramic glazes. His vibrant palettes and experimental methods often invite comparison with the work of fellow abstract innovator Helen Frankenthaler. Jenkins has been the subject of major retrospectives at the Musée Picasso in Antibes, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, Tate, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
