Peter Brown widely known as “Pete the Street,” is a British contemporary painter celebrated for his energetic plein-air depictions of urban life, street scenes, and landscapes. Based in Bath, England, Brown has built an international reputation for painting directly from observation in all weather conditions, capturing the atmosphere, movement, and immediacy of everyday life with remarkable vitality. His work bridges the traditions of British Impressionism and modern figurative painting, emphasizing spontaneity, light, and the human presence within the contemporary cityscape.Born in Reading, England, Brown studied Fine Art at Manchester Polytechnic, graduating in 1990. During his early years as an artist, he explored abstraction before returning to figurative painting after settling in Bath in the early 1990s. The city became a lasting source of inspiration and helped shape the distinctive observational style for which he is now recognized. Refusing to rely on photographic references, Brown paints almost exclusively from life, often completing works over several consecutive sittings in busy public spaces.Brown’s paintings are known for their rich impasto surfaces, expressive brushwork, and atmospheric handling of light and weather. His subjects range from crowded London streets and markets to quieter interiors, festivals, industrial scenes, beaches, and international city views. Over the course of his career, he has painted extensively throughout the United Kingdom as well as in India, Vietnam, Cuba, Europe, and the United States. His fascination with human activity and public life has made him one of Britain’s most recognizable contemporary plein-air painters.A highly respected figure within British art institutions, Brown was elected a member of the New English Art Club (NEAC) in 1998 and later served as its President from 2018 to 2023. He is also associated with several leading British art societies, including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Pastel Society, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Throughout his career he has received numerous awards, including the Prince of Wales Award for Portrait Drawing and multiple Critics’ Choice awards at the NEAC.Brown has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across the United Kingdom, particularly with Messums London and the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath. His works are held in public and private collections including the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, the National Library of Wales, the Victoria Art Gallery, and the Savoy Art Collection. In recent years, Brown gained additional international attention through works connected to Banksy’s “Cut & Run” exhibition in Glasgow, where his paintings documenting the aftermath of Banksy’s Margate mural were featured prominently.Today, Peter Brown continues to paint directly from life, maintaining his commitment to observational painting in an era increasingly dominated by digital imagery. His work stands as a contemporary continuation of the plein-air tradition, combining technical immediacy with a deeply human portrayal of modern urban experience.
