Prefab77, also known as Peter Manning, is a UK-based artist whose work is shaped by the cultures and creative energy of England, California, and New York. His artistic journey began with formal training as a printmaker and designer for Her Majesty's British Army, where he developed the technical precision and visual discipline that would become the foundation of his practice. This early experience informed his initial work exploring British themes before he relocated to New York to work in fashion and branding—an environment that continues to influence his artistic language today. During this period, he developed a lasting fascination with portraiture and the female form, subjects that remain central to his work.Living on Elizabeth Street in Nolita during the transformative 1990s, Manning witnessed a neighbourhood in transition—from gritty, graffiti-covered streets and makeshift doorways to luxury boutiques and heavily guarded jewellery stores. He became captivated by the city's evolving visual landscape: layers of weathered posters, torn paper, tags, and street markings that combined over time to create an accidental yet compelling beauty—raw, urgent, and deeply authentic.Right outside his front door, the emerging street art movement was taking shape. Works by artists such as Swoon, Faile, Obey, and WK Interact began appearing on the surrounding walls, transforming the streets into an open-air gallery. Encountering this new visual language was both an epiphany and a calling, igniting a passion that would grow into a lifelong artistic obsession.
