Richard Diebenkorn
|
Richard Diebenkorn is celebrated for introducing a distinctly West Coast sensibility to Abstract Expressionism. Working primarily in oil and acrylic, he developed richly layered compositions that combine gestural brushwork with geometric structure, often drawing inspiration from the light, space, and atmosphere of the American landscape. While echoes of Willem de Kooning can occasionally be felt in his energetic surfaces, Diebenkorn forged a highly individual visual language, using nuanced color and luminous light to evoke a powerful sense of place. This approach reaches its most iconic expression in the celebrated Ocean Park series, whose soft, atmospheric palettes were inspired by the coastal suburb of Santa Monica where the artist lived and worked.Across a career spanning more than four decades, Diebenkorn exhibited extensively throughout the United States and achieved international recognition, representing the country at the Venice Biennale. Today, his paintings regularly achieve eight-figure prices at auction and are held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the The Phillips Collection, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among many others. In addition to his celebrated landscapes and abstract compositions, Diebenkorn also produced a number of intimate portraits that occupy a compelling space between abstraction and figuration.
