Sally Mann

AmericanAmerican
, b. 1951
Sally Mann was born in Lexington, Virginia, in 1951. Her deeply personal and often controversial photography examines themes of family, mortality and the American South. Using traditional and experimental photographic processes, she creates images that are both intimate and haunting. Her early series Immediate Family explored childhood and innocence, while later projects turned to the landscape and the decay of the body, inflected with a sense of time and memory. Mann’s style combines technical mastery with emotional depth, using imperfection and atmosphere to convey a poetic sense of place.
