Sho Shibuya is a Brooklyn-based artist best known for Sunrise from a Small Window, an ongoing daily painting series he began in 2020. In the series, Shibuya paints directly onto the front page of The New York Times, transforming the newspaper into a quiet visual record of each morning’s light while responding to the uncertainty of the pandemic era and the intensity of the global news cycle.Working within the fixed format of the newspaper page, Shibuya uses acrylic paint as his primary medium, often incorporating found objects, tape, and origami-inspired three-dimensional elements. His practice shifts in response to each subject, balancing minimal gesture, material experimentation, and social observation.Shibuya’s work has been exhibited at Unit London; the Tokyo National Museum; the 23rd International Exhibition Triennale in Milan; and Art Basel Miami, where he collaborated with Saint Laurent in 2022. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, Paris; the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, New York; and DIB Bangkok Museum, Bangkok.
