Sonia Boyce works across photography, film, installation, performance, printmaking, and other media to examine the intersections of class, race, and gender in Britain and beyond. She first gained prominence in the 1980s as part of the UK’s Black arts movement, alongside artists such as Rasheed Araeen, Lubaina Himid, and Shakka Dedi. During this period, Boyce created incisive figurative drawings and photo collages that addressed identity, representation, and cultural politics.Over time, her practice evolved to incorporate a strong social and collaborative dimension, often integrating song, sound, and performance. Through these expanded forms, Boyce explores collective authorship, improvisation, and the dynamics of visibility and voice. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including in London, New York, Berlin, and Vienna. In 2022, she was selected to represent Great Britain at the Venice Biennale, becoming the first Black woman to represent Britain in the festival’s British Pavilion. In 2020, she was included in The Artsy Vanguard, recognizing her as one of the most influential contemporary artists shaping the global art landscape.
