Sterling Ruby
|
Sterling Ruby embraces an omnivorous approach to material and process, moving fluidly between ceramics, sculpture, textiles, installation, and painting. His work is distinguished by bold color, monumental scale, and a striking sense of spectacle. Recurring themes in his practice draw on societal pressures and the built environment of Los Angeles, where he lives and works—often examining the ways architecture shapes human behavior and psychology.Ruby earned his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and went on to complete his MFA at the ArtCenter College of Design. His work has been exhibited internationally in New York, London, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, and Los Angeles. Beyond the gallery context, Ruby has collaborated extensively with designer Raf Simons, contributing to projects for Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, and Simons’s eponymous label. He has also partnered on a number of contemporary dance productions, further expanding the interdisciplinary scope of his practice.
