Using colored paper and cardboard, Thomas Demand meticulously reconstructs interior scenes from photographs of historic events—sometimes at life-size scale—before capturing them in his own photographs. Once documented, these ephemeral facsimiles are destroyed, leaving only the photographic record of their existence. This conceptual approach allows Demand to examine the fluid nature of truth and the role of collective memory in an era saturated with images.Since the 1990s, Demand has held solo exhibitions at prestigious institutions, including the Serpentine Galleries, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. In 2004, he represented Germany at the São Paulo Bienal. Expanding his practice beyond still photography, he has also been creating stop-motion films from his images since 2002. His work commands high prices at auction, often selling for six figures.
