Toni Frissell was an American photographer whose career bridged fashion, portraiture and documentary photography. Born in 1907 in New York, she became known for breaking away from studio conventions, photographing models outdoors and in motion for publications such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. During the Second World War, Frissell turned her lens to humanitarian and military subjects, producing some of the most recognisable wartime images for the Red Cross and Life magazine. Her work is noted for its energy, clarity and human warmth.
