Tyler Mitchell is a renowned photographer and filmmaker whose work spans multiple genres, focusing on creating and documenting a fresh aesthetic of Blackness. In 2018, he made history as the first Black photographer to shoot the cover of Vogue for Beyoncé’s iconic September issue. The following year, a portrait from this series was acquired by The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, where it became part of their permanent collection. In 2019, Mitchell held his first solo exhibition, I Can Make You Feel Good, at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, presenting new photographic and video works, including his film Idyllic Space. This exhibition was later showcased at the International Center of Photography in New York in 2020. To coincide with the exhibition, Mitchell published a monograph, Tyler Mitchell, with Prestel Random House, further exploring his vision of a Black visual utopia. In 2020, Mitchell was named the recipient of the prestigious Gordon Parks Fellowship, which supports a new project inspired by Parks’ focus on representation and social justice. Mitchell’s fellowship work will culminate in a major exhibition at the Gordon Parks Foundation Gallery in Pleasantville, NY. Mitchell has lectured widely on the politics of image-making, sharing his insights at institutions such as Harvard University, Paris Photo, and the International Center of Photography (ICP).
