Ugo Rondinone

SwissSwiss
, b. 1964

Ugo Rondinone’s diverse artistic practice spans installations, sculptures, psychedelic paintings, and large-scale drawings, all unified by an exploration of opposing forces—day and night, reality and artifice, euphoria and melancholy. His most iconic works are the vibrant “Rocks” sculptures: towering stacks of fluorescently painted stones inspired by natural geological formations and the meditative art of rock balancing. These monumental pieces have been installed in public spaces across Liverpool, Miami, and the Nevada desert, with smaller versions featured in gallery exhibitions. Rondinone’s practice also includes bull’s-eye-shaped, neon-hued mandala paintings and cast-bronze sculptures. His work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions like the Contemporary Austin, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Bass, and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2007, he represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale. Rondinone’s pieces frequently command six-figure sums at auction.
