Wang Guangyi
|
Wang Guangyi repurposes the visual language of Chinese propaganda into striking paintings that critique the collision of communist ideology and the expanding influence of Western consumer culture. Closely associated with the Political Pop movement, Wang is best known for his seminal Great Criticism series, which features works such as Great Criticism – Louis Vuitton and Great Criticism – Coca-Cola. In these compositions, heroic Mao-era imagery rendered in bold reds and yellows is juxtaposed with global brand logos, fabricated serial numbers, and provocative slogans such as “No!”, creating a powerful tension between collectivist propaganda and capitalist advertising. An important figure in China’s ’85 New Wave Movement, Wang played a key role in the emergence of contemporary Chinese art. He was among the first Chinese artists to appropriate Mao Zedong iconography within a contemporary artistic context, transforming politically charged imagery into a critical exploration of ideology, mass media, and cultural identity.
