Zhang Xiaogang is a prominent Chinese painter and a key figure in the contemporary Chinese avant-garde. His stylized portraits, inspired by Surrealism and rendered in smooth oil paint, embody a formal and rigid aesthetic that reflects the lingering impact of the Cultural Revolution while exploring themes of family, history, and memory in modern China. Born in 1958 in Kunming, Zhang studied painting at the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in Chongqing. However, after being unable to pursue his teaching aspirations, he took on construction and various odd jobs, which plunged him into a deep depression exacerbated by alcoholism, culminating in his hospitalization in 1984.
A turning point came in the late 1980s when he discovered an album of his family's old photographs, sparking the creation of his acclaimed Bloodlines series. This body of work has garnered him international recognition, with exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Pace Gallery in New York, the 1995 Venice Biennale, and the Daegu Art Museum. Zhang currently lives and works in Beijing, China.
